The girl was running through the forest.
She was beginning to get scared—she was lost, had been for hours now, and she knew it. She became untrusting of the green disarray that surrounded her. There was more depth to the forest than she wanted to discover.
Catherine was probably fretting over where she had wandered off to, finally woken up from napping underneath The Big Tree—their favorite reading spot. Her sister was constantly protective of her like that, especially outside, which she had always attempted to escape.
And she had now, for the first time. But she had gotten lost.
She was panting.
Her sundress was streaked with dirt and grass, and she was tired—so very tired. She walked north, slowly, until she tripped on a large rock. She fell, but she didn’t have the strength to stand.
So she gave up, sitting there. Resting. For a while, it seemed fine. The hurt in her legs eased, she felt calm.
Then, she saw a flash of brown by the trees, accompanied by light thumps on the ground. Another flash. And another.
She grew more nervous by the second, imagining creatures thrice her size to pounce and swallow her whole. “Who’s there?” She called, but it was almost a scream.
And then her fate was delivered by an enormous, brown wolf.
An hour later, when Catherine had strayed way too far from The Big Tree, darkness was falling. “Molly?” She yelled. “Molly, for God’s sake, where are you?”
But she had to stop in her tracks. She had stepped in a pool of blood.
